Fremantle Prison
Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s most fascinating and significant cultural attractions. The largest convict built structure in Western Australia, it is the most intact convict establishment in the entire country, and was decommissioned as a maximum-security prison in 1991. With thick limestone walls, solitary cells and gallows it is a monument to a system punishment that is uncomfortably recent.Experienced guides bring the rich folklore and stories of the Prison to life on a range themed tours. ‘Do time’ on a Doing Time Tour or ‘escape’ on the Great Escape Tour. Are you feeling brave? You can explore the darker side of Fremantle Prison at night on a Torchlight Tour.
In 1894 prisoners completed construction of the 1km labyrinth of tunnels located 20 metres beneath Fremantle Prison, which you can explore on a Tunnels Tour. Bookings are required for Torchlight and Tunnel Tours.
