Kings Park

Minutes from the city centre lies glorious Kings Park. Encompassing over 400 hectares, of which more than two thirds is natural bushland, it gives sweeping views of the central city, the south bank of the river, Melville Mater (an inland sailing paradise), and the hill escarpment that surrounds Perth.

The Park’s 17 hectare Botanic garden presents a year round display of Western Australia’s unique flora. The entire park bursts into colour during the spring Wildflower Festival at the end of September.

Banksias, eucalypts and sheoaks predominantly wood the virgin bushland, along with over 450 plant and 17 bird species. Volunteer guides conduct daily free walks (except on Christmas Day) at 10am and 2pm, including leisurely and entertaining Botanic Garden and Heritage Walks, and seasonal Wild flower and Bush Walks. Call 9480 3600 or pop into the information kiosk and souvenir shop near Fraser’s Restaurant, for details.

You can also take a tram tour, conducted by Perth Tram Company (telephone 9322 2006), which goes around the Park, and allows you to hop off and on again to continue the tour.

An evening visit to Kings Park is not to be missed, be sure to catch the illuminated lemon-scented gums in the honour avenue.
